Listen to this Article
There is no doubt in stating that a company secretary is one of the most important people in an organization. A company secretary ensures that the company which he/she is working in complies with all the applicable laws and acts in accordance with the regulatory authorities. A CS is a person who acts as an intermediary between the organization and its board of directors.
The course for the company secretary is regulated by The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). The organization was established in 1980 under an act of the Indian Parliament. ICSI has headquarters in Delhi and regional offices across India. A company that has a paid up capital of at least Rs. 5 crores needs to appoint a full time company secretary.
The course is divided in three parts namely:
- Foundation stage
- Executive stage
- Professional stage
Students who desire to take up CS as a career should be 10+2 from a recognized board or university with commerce, science or arts background. Those who have applied for their secondary exams can also apply, provided proof of passing the test is made within 6 months of making the application.
The duration of the program is of mainly 8 months excluding the examination and months of admission. The course is valid for 3 years from the month in which the application was made.
The examination is held twice a year, once in June and then in December. There are no specific dates for the registration; however, students should register before 8 months of the month in which the examination is going to be conducted. Registration for June exams should be made before 30th September and for those who wish to come out in December, the final date of the application will be 31st March of the same year.
The job opportunity in this particular area is bright. After the completion of the course, a candidate will be a certified CS and also can have a large scope of utilization in consulting firms, banks, private companies or financial institutions. Likewise, if one does not wish to perform a job in any organization, they can even start their own independent practice. There is a huge demand of company secretaries in western societies as well, like USA and UK.
Many have this confusion in their minds that whether company secretaries have to do more management related work or more on the fiscal side. Well, the role sums up to taking care of various duties related to the establishment, namely: managerial, financial, government, laws related work, etc.
As it’s with most of the roles nowadays, the usage of computers is quite essential and imperative. It is not only important for the CS being computer savvy, but also be informed with the latest changes occurring in and around various sectors. The company secretary position is challenging and also rewarding at the same time. A certified company secretary can either seek a job a company or can start his/her own practice after getting the certification.
