SC seeks reply of Centre, RBI on exchanging demonetised notes

The Supreme Court has questioned the Centre and the RBI on a plea made by petitioner, Sharad Mishra.
The plea brought in focus the allegation that people were not allowed to deposit the old currency notes of 500 and 1000 in the specified RBI branches.
The Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice, J S Khehar asked the petitioner, Sharad Mishra to give a copy of the notice to the Centre and Reserve Bank of India.
A reference to the speech by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, on November 8, 2016, and the notification of RBI specifying that the people may deposit demonetised currency notes till March 31, 2017 was made in the plea.
RBI had clearly mentioned in its notification dated December 31 that the people who were abroad during the period of November 8, 2016 to December 30, 2016 could deposit their old currency notes at specified RBI branches.
