Canada to welcome One Million immigrants over next 3 years

Canada aims to welcome over 10 lakh immigrants over the next three years, up to 2022. This spells good news for skilled Indians, especially those in the technology sector. Given the challenges thrown up by the US immigration policies Canada has emerged as an attractive alternate destination.
According to a press release by Canada’s ‘Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship’ (IRCC), the government agency that oversees immigration, the target is to admit up to 3.41 lakh permanent residents in 2020, increase it to 3.51 lakh in 2021 and 3.61 lakh in 2022.
TOI had recently analysed the open source data made available by the Canadian government for 2019.
During this year, one in four foreigners granted permanent resident (PR) status was an Indian. Of the 3.41 lakh such individuals admitted in 2019, 25.1% or 85,585 were from India. According to immigration experts, India is likely to continue to be the top source country, a large number of skilled workers especially in the tech sector will be drawn from India. PR is akin to a US green card, with the family acquiring the right to live, work or study anywhere in Canada with a subsequent path to citizenship.
The multi-year immigrations level plan was tabled in Canada’s Parliament recently, by Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC).
“Our immigration system benefits all Canadians by strengthening the middle class, keeping families together and building strong and inclusive communities. This increase in immigration levels supports a system that will help Canadian business create good middle class jobs and grow the economy while ensuring Canada continues to meet its humanitarian obligations around the world,” Mendicino stated.
Over the past few years, Canada has increasingly widened its doors to welcome immigrants, especially skilled immigrants, to meet the demographic challenges of an ageing population and to compete and win in a competitive global marketplace.
More than half of the new immigrants will be via the economic class, such as through the Express Entry programs and the Provincial Nominee Programs.
