Income Tax inquiry against former Chief Justice Balakrishnan
Listen to this Article
The Home Ministry has asked the revenue department for a report on allegations that former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income during his tenure as a Supreme Court judge and CJI.
Sources said the move to ask the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to inquire came after advocate Prashant Bhushan wrote to Home Minister P Chidambaram giving details of Balakrishnan’s allegedly undervalued assets, and listing properties allegedly belonging to him and his relatives.
The Home Ministry is the administrative ministry in charge of the National Human Right Commission (NHRC), of which Balakrishnan is currently chairman. (Indian Express)
