Senior income tax official from Kanpur arrested for 25-lakh bribe

One of Kanpur's most senior income tax officers, the Commissioner of Investigations, has been arrested by the CBI.
Kunal Singh of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) was arrested this morning along with three other senior tax officials. They reportedly accepted bribes from the head of a real estate company named Eldeco.
The company's Managing Director, Pankaj Bajaj, has also been arrested.
Sources said that based on a tip-off that the officers were allegedly accepting bribe to settle a tax-evasion cases, the CBI had carried out searches at various locations.
Mr Singh, who was heading the probe and criminal investigation units of the Income Tax department, had along with his team recently conducted search operations against officials of the Greater Noida Authority and private real estate players in Uttar Pradesh and the national capital region (NCR).
