Total Number of Companies in the Official Registry
As per the records of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs there were a total of 13.45 lakh companies in the official Registry as on 31st August 2013. However, out of these as many as 2.57 lakh companies have been closed and there are 30,127 companies that are in the process of being closed. Also, as many as 1.44 lakh companies have not filed their Annual Returns/ Balance Sheets (i.e., Annual Statutory Filings) for more than 3 consecutive years, and are thus classified as ‘dormant’. As a result, there are actually about 8.99 lakh active companies.
Recently (August 2013) six Government-owned companies were registered under the Companies Act, 1956 as public limited companies with authorized capital of Rs. 4,181 crore. Of these, four are Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) and two are State Level Public Enterprises (SLPEs). During the month of August 2013, a total of 7,179 companies were registered under the Companies Act, 1956.
