Govt mulls special session of Parliament to pass GST Bill
With just two days left of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the government is making a last-minute effort to find a way to get parliamentary approval for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill.
If the bill is not passed in Rajya Sabha in these two days, the government could call a short special session of both Houses of Parliament to pass the GST Bill.
With split in Opposition coming to the fore, the government has contacted Samajwadi Party, Nationalist Congress Party and Trinamool Congress, trying to bring them on board on the pro-reform GST, according to sources.
The legislation was passed by the Lok Sabha during the last session of Parliament. Also, the parliamentary committee in Rajya Sabha has given its nod to the Bill.
Meanwhile, the BJP and Congress have both issued a whip to its members asking them to be present in the House.
Yesterday, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley slammed Congress for harming the country’s economy and attacked Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for pursuing a policy of disruption, which, he said, had isolated them within the Opposition.
Congress has been demanding resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on Lalit Modi controversy and that of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over the Vyapam scam.
The Speaker had last week suspended 25 Congress members for not observing rules.
