Amar Singh arrested, sent to judicial custody
Former SP general secretary Amar Singh has been arrested in connection with the cash-for-vote scam. Delhi court rejected his bail petition and sent him to judicial custody.
He can file for regular bail on September 16. Mahavir Bhagora has also been arrested. Earlier, he claimed claimed that he suffered from kidney ailment and was surviving on a donor's kidney. The special court judge had asked Amar Singh and others to wait for the order.
Amar Singh was forced to attend court in the cash-for-vote scam after the judge asked his counsel to submit medical records on his health. He attened court along with his doctor. His lawyers have filed a bail application.
Former SP general secretary Amar Singh had cited health reasons and asked for exemption from appearance in the court today. Amar Singh's lawyer said, "He is unwell and confined to bed." But later he decided to attend the court session.
The court has adjourned the hearing in cash-for-vote scam and asked Amar Singh's lawyer to produce all his medical records.
LK Advani's former close aide Sudheendra Kulkarni and two ex-BJP MPs, have been charge sheeted by Delhi police for their alleged involvement in the 2008 cash-for-vote scam, are likely to appear before a court on Tuesday.
Delhi Police, in its 80-page charge sheet filed before special judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal, had named Amar Singh, Kulkarni, two former BJP MPs Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahabir Singh Bhagora, along with Sanjeev Saxena, former aide of Amar Singh and Suhail Hindustani, alleged BJP activist, who are in judicial custody.
The court had on August 25 taken cognizance of the charge sheet and issued summons to the accused to stand trial for their alleged role in the scam.
Besides asking Amar Singh, Kulkarni, Kulaste and Bhagora to be present in the court on September 6, the judge had also issued production warrants against Saxena and Hindustani who are now lodged in Tihar Jail.
"I take cognizance of all the offences mentioned in the charge sheet," the judge had said.
Crime Branch of Delhi Police, in its charge sheet, had indicted all the six accused for their roles in the scam, involving payment of bribes to some MPs to win their votes in a trust motion for the Congress-led UPA government.
Regarding the role of Amar Singh, the police alleged he had "conspired" with Saxena and others to bribe the then MPs and Kulkarni who had played an "active role" during the confidence motion. (Hindustan Times)
