Sudha Sharma likely to be new CBDT head
Sudha Sharma, a 1976 batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, is likely to be the new head of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
Its current chairperson Poonam Kishore Saxena will retire on May 31.
"Sudha Sharma's appointment as the next CBDT chairperson is likely to be notified soon," a senior finance ministry official said.
Sharma is currently a Member (Legislation and Computerisation) in the CBDT.
CBDT comes under the revenue department of finance ministry and provides essential inputs for policy and planning of direct taxes in India.
It is also responsible for administration of direct tax laws through the Income Tax Department.
The Board will be responsible for mopping up direct tax revenue which is estimated at Rs 6.68 lakh crore for 2013-14, up from Rs 5.65 lakh crore in the previous fiscal. (Business Standard)
